Learn Spelling – Teach Spelling With the Spelling Patterns
Need help with spelling? Teaching spelling or learning how to spell doesn’t have to be daunting even if you have a learning disability, dyslexia, or are even gifted. And, yes, even gifted kids sometimes struggle with spelling. Spelling problems are typically due to areas of auditory processing that aren’t working as effeciently as they should and could be working. But, when you teach spelling with the spelling patterns in an auditory, visual, and tactile way, everyone can spell.
When I tell parents that there are only 8 spelling patterns they are usually quite surprised. But, we only put letters together 8 ways to make words. Then, they become curious as to how I teach the patterns to my students. They ask me all the time to show them how to use Making Spelling Sense.
Here is a home schooling family using Making Spelling Sense with their younger kids. They use Making Spelling Sense II with their older kids. You can even see one of their older kids helping the youngest (who is in preschool) join in the lesson. Spelling is really a family affair! Watch the Woods family using Making Spelling Sense (with one of the first lessons) and see how easy spelling can be. They are doing the spelling lesson with multiple age kids.

Hi .. I am karthik from INDIA. I face a lot of problem with spellings many of dyslexia course are designed for children not for adults.. since i done the high school me memorized a lot of words. I dont how tp pronounce thge words properly ….

The key is to learn the sounds of the letters and the spelling patterns. The spelling program is actually used with all ages – including adult dyslexics. There is nothing ‘cutesy’ about the program so all ages can use it. My older students usually get through the first book quite rapidly and then move on to the second book with confidence. The difference is the process that the program uses which gets at the underlying causes of spelling problems. Typically when one has trouble spelling it is due to auditory processing difficulties. The process that is used in the program addresses those problems at the same time as it teaches the structure of the language (the 8 ways we put letters together to make words). The program also comes with a dvd of me explaining each of the 8 patterns.

I agree. It’s really effective to combine different learning styles. By combining the different senses the kids are using different areas of their brain to memorize and learn. This is key! Great post.
Thanks! That is why the spelling program uses both visual, auditory, and tactile/kinesthetic modes. There are vision perception puzzles with each lesson. The methods used incorporate multiple areas of auditory processing, and the process used is tactile/kinesthetic.
