Auditory Memory Part 3

In the last post Learning Reading Help: Auditory Memory Part 2 I talked about learning reading and went over some specific activities you can do in just minutes a day to target areas of auditory processing that affect learning reading. Remember, when you need learning reading help you want to be sure you are considering all of the areas that may be problematic to learning reading. Whether you have dyslexia, an identified learning disability, are falling through the cracks, or are gifted, these areas of visual and auditory perception are the reason why you need reading help.

Learning Reading Help: Auditory Processing Areas

<img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1767" style="margin: 5px 12px;" title="Learning Reading Help Auditory Processing" src="http://www.bonnieterry.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/Hearing-Graphic11-22-2010-6-59-43-PM4-150x150.png" alt="learning reading help"width="107" height="107" />There are multiple areas of auditory processing that affect learning reading. Auditory memory is just one of the areas. I’m sure most of you are aware of auditory discrimination, the ability to tell one sound from another. Problems with auditory discrimination can lead to difficulties acquiring, understanding, and using spoken language as well as poor spelling.
There are other areas such as auditory closure. When you have auditory closure problems, you have difficulty with sounding out words, with attending to auditory stimuli, and filling in the gaps when you have missed parts of words or pars of conversations. These problems can also lead to incorrect English usage and spelling.

Part 1 Auditory Memory

<img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1518" title="Learning Reading Help" src="http://www.bonnieterry.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/Hearing-Graphic11-22-2010-6-59-43-PM1-150x150.png" alt="learning reading"width="92" height="92" />

When you need learning reading help you want to be sure you are considering all of the areas that may be problematic to learning reading. Whether you have dyslexia, an identified learning disability, are falling through the cracks, or are gifted, these areas of perception are the reason why you need reading help.

Remember, there are 9 areas of auditory processing, 9 areas of visual processing, and 9 areas of tactile/kinesthetic processing that affect learning. When you have a difficulty in any of those areas learning reading can become difficult.

Learning Reading Help: Auditory Areas

For example, auditory memory is just one of the 9 areas or auditory processing that is critical for learning reading skills. If you can’t remember the sounds of the letters you will have trouble with learning reading. However, there is more to auditory memory than just straight recall of sounds.

Auditory Memory and Learning Reading Help

I have worked with students that could restate whatever I said such as a list of words…blue, purple, red. But they were not able to use that information, process it, and then give me an answer. I have worked with other students that could remember songs but had great difficulty remembering their spelling words. And spelling is part of learning reading skills. There really is a difference between sheer regurgitation of auditory information and the utilization of the material you hear.

Proust and the Squid: A Must-Read for Parents with Kids Struggling to Read

This guest post is contributed by Olivia Coleman

If your child is struggling with reading in particular, is actually dyslexic, or possesses some other impediment to learning such a valuable skill, then it’s important to know as much as possible about the process that undergirds the act of reading in the first place. While there’s a lot of literature on the topic out there, Maryanne Wolf’s Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain is a very accessible book about reading that’s an enjoyable and fascinating experience as well.

In her preface, Wolf establishes themes that she explores throughout the book. She notes:

“We know that each new type of writing system developed through millennia of human history, and required different adaptations of the human brain; we know that the multifaceted development of reading extends from infancy to ever-deepening levels of expertise; and we know that the curious mix of challenge and mix to be found in dyslexia in which the brain struggles to learn to read contains insights that our transforming our understanding of reading.”

Wolf’s book is an intriguing mix of different academic disciplines that gives readers an insight into what exactly is going on when we set our eyes on words and interpret them. She delves into literature, history, anthropology, neuroscience and much more to illuminate how our species came to be readers in the first place, especially since, unlike speech, it isn’t an activity that is naturally ingrained in anyone.

In the second part of her book, Wolf examines dyslexia at close range. She explains how the tremendous advances in neuroscience and biology of the last few decades have helped us to more intimately understand the nature of the disability. Wolf also recounts her personal experiences with her dyslexic son, and she moreover peppers her book with anecdotes taken from her professional life as a the director of the Center for Reading and Language Research at Tufts University in Boston, where she works with readers of all ages.

The best part about Wolf’s wonderful book is that it eloquently captures why reading can be such an enjoyable and transformative experience. It also offers hope for those suffering from dyslexia by demonstrating how amazingly pliable and regenerative our brain circuitry is. For lovers of reading, scientists, educators, and parents, “Proust and the Squid” has something to offer everyone.

For more information on the book, you can read the Guardian book review here.

Whether your child has dyslexia, has an identified learning disability, is falling through the cracks at school or is even gifted… understanding what is interfering with their learning reading skills makes the difference in reading success or reading failure.

3 Roadblocks to Learning Reading.

1.	Learning Reading: Phonics Related Problem
This is the type of problem where it is almost ‘painful’ to listen to your child read. This happens more frequently with children in the primary grades, although older children can also have this difficulty. This first roadblock to reading success is phonics related. Phonics reading problems are when a child ‘jumbles’ or mispronounces the words as they are trying to decode (the ability to sound out printed words) or encode (the ability to put letters to the sounds that make up a word). You have no idea what the word is that they are trying to read until you look at it yourself.

2. Learning Reading: Fluency/Visual Tracking Problem
This is when you listen to your child read the selection doesn’t make any sense to you. You know something must be missing. The second reading roadblock to reading success is where it takes your child what seems like forever to read the sentence or they have skipped, omitted, or repeated words when reading. They may even re-read the whole selection and still not get meaning from it because they have missed bits and pieces of what they have read. This fluency problem happens quite often with children of all ages, from 1st grade to adults. Over the years I have found that most students that have reading problems or are ‘reluctant readers’ have fluency/visual tracking problems that interfere with their reading.

3. Learning Reading: Lack of Language or Vocabulary Problem
This is when your child reads and you know they don’t understand the meaning of the words they are reading. This prevents comprehension or being able to understand what you read. Many children don’t have a large base of language or vocabulary. This happens often due to poor visual memory or auditory memory skills. This makes reading comprehension difficult. This problem may not be noticeable until the 4th grade and above due to the relatively common vocabulary that is used in reading material for younger students.

There are solutions to each of these roadblocks to learning reading skills.

4 Activities to Improve Reading Skills

(Part 3 – Reading Comprehension)

As a parent you do have the power and ability to help your kids improve their reading skills. Now what I mean here is that you as a parent can help your child whether they have an identified learning disability, dyslexia, ADHD, or are gifted. There are 4 easy to implement activities that each take just a few minutes a day to improve reading.

Improve reading fluency in 5 minutes a day

Improve spelling and learn the 8 ways we put letters together to make words

Improve reading comprehension by playing a reading comprehension game

Improve writing skills using specially designed graphic organizers

Improve Reading Skills Activities

The first activity you can do to help your child improve reading skills just takes 5 minutes a day - reading fluency. The second activity which is helping your children improve reading skills is by helping your children improve their spelling skills (about 12 minutes). The third activity is to play games with your children. The key here is to play games that are specifically designed to improve reading comprehension.

So, the third activity is playing a reading comprehension game. That’s right, game playing! Playing The Comprehension Zone, a reading comprehension game, teaches your kids how to read for the main idea and details or sequence what they read does the trick.

So many children struggle with reading comprehension, specifically finding the main idea of what they are reading or finding details that support the main idea or for sequential order. This can be daunting for some students, and not just those students with LD, dyslexia, or ADHD. You don’t have to have a learning disability to have difficulty with reading comprehension! Even gifted children sometimes struggle with reading comprehension.

Think about how difficult note-taking is when you don’t have a clue about the main idea of what you read. Typically you either stare at blank sheets of paper or you copy everything down, not knowing how to pick out the important information.

Play Reading Game to Improve Reading Skills

<img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1726" style="margin: 5px 12px;" title="Reading Comprehension" src="http://www.bonnieterry.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/Rocket-Rap-with-kids-21-150x150.png" alt="improve reading skills"width="150" height="150" />To be able to play a game and learn, practice, and reinforce the skill of pulling out the main idea and the details or putting information into sequential order at the same time is quite something. Additionally, this reading game can be played for both reading comprehension or listening comprehension.

One of the beauties of playing games that improve reading skills, teach, and reinforce skills is that you are in a relaxed state when you are playing. Leaning is retained more efficiently when your body is not in a tense fight or flight state. Using games to learn skills is a way to learn in a non-threatening way.

Games even help and encourage learners to stay interested and they often work happier and longer without even realizing it.

Lee Su Kim states:
‘There is a common perception that all learning should be serious and solemn in nature, and that if one is having fun and there is hilarity and laughter, then it is not really learning. This is a misconception. It is possible to learn a language as well as enjoy oneself at the same time. One of the best ways of doing this is through games.’

‘There are many advantages of using games to improve reading skills in the classroom:

1. Games are a welcome break from the usual routine of the language class.
2. They are motivating and challenging.
3. Learning a language requires a great deal of effort. Games help students to make and sustain the effort of learning.
4. Games provide language practice in the various skills- speaking, writing, listening and reading.
5. They encourage students to interact and communicate.
6. They create a meaningful context for language use.’
Creative Games for the Language Class ‘Forum’ Vol. 33 No 1, January – March 1995, Page 35

So, be sure to include games like The Comprehension Zone in your family’s activities. Your children will benefit from them. And, you will be spending quality time with your children and be helping them improve their reading comprehension skills at the same time.

4 Easy Activities to

Improve Reading Skills Part 2

As a parent you do have the power and ability to help your kids improve reading skills. Now what I mean here is that you as a parent can help your child whether they have an identified learning disability, dyslexia, ADHD, or are gifted. There are 4 easy to implement activities that each take just a few minutes a day to improve reading skills.

Improve reading fluency in 5 minutes a day

Improve spelling and learn the 8 ways we put letters together to make words

Improve reading comprehension by playing a reading comprehension game

Improve writing skills using specially designed graphic organizers

My last post 4 Easy Activities to Improve Reading Skills (Part 1) talked about the first activity you can do to help your child – reading fluency. Today I’m going to talk about the second activity which is helping your children improve their reading – and that is by helping them with their spelling skills.

Improve Reading Skills – Spelling

So, the second of the 4 easy to implement activities to help your child improve their reading and writing skills is spelling. One aspect of reading is called decoding – the ability to sound out words. Another aspect is called encoding – the ability to spell the words you hear. Being a successful speller impacts your writing. Everyone actually knows the words you are writing because they are spelled correctly.

<img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1794" style="margin: 5px 12px;" title="Improve Reading Skills" src="http://www.bonnieterry.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/Child-with-Learning-Problems7-150x150.png" alt="improve reading skills"width="150" height="150" />So many kids struggle with improving reading skills and spelling and they don’t need to! Now I’m not talking only about children with LD or dyslexia or ADHD. Even gifted children often struggle with spelling. Spelling really doesn’t have to be so hard! If you understand that we just put letters together 8 ways to make words, spelling becomes easy. Spelling becomes easy for everyone, even children and adults with LD, dyslexia, or ADHD.

The majority of words use the most common vowel pattern which is the vowel consonant pattern. Just learning this pattern alone will help your child improve their spelling because so many one syllable and multi-syllable words have at least one syllable in them that follows this spelling pattern.

Improve Reading Skills Example

For example, the word example has 3 syllables. The first syllable, ex is a vowel consonant pattern, the second syllable, am is also a vowel consonant pattern. Only the third syllable is a different pattern. The last syllable, the ple is the consonant + le spelling pattern. I explain that when you have an le at the end of a two or three syllable word, it grabs the consonant in front of it to form the syllable. I even grab their arm saying the le grabs the consonant in front of it like in table, purple, people, and example. Doing this body movement helps this pattern sink in to kids and they ‘get it.’

For more information on how to improve reading skills as well as spelling, see Making Spelling Sense. Making Spelling Sense teaches the 8 ways we put letters together to make words – the 8 spelling patterns with an auditory, visual, and tactile method. This special method is what really makes the difference because it addresses the underlying causes of spelling problems and at the same time it teaches the structure of the language and how to spell thousands of words.

Bonnie,

I found you through Youtube and am intrigued by the 10 Minutes to Better Study Skills!

My home-schooled daughter is 16 and dual-enrolling in our local community college and currently in her first class.

She is struggling with note-taking! She also took the SAT in June and scored poorly in the reading portion, especially the “passage” reading. I’m beginning to make the connection with these two problems… there seems to be a struggle, for her, in pulling out keys points in a written document, or passage, and in an oral lecture.

She tends to want to write down too much from a lecture and gets overwhelmed when given a passage to read with questions to answer, especially when timed. For writing assignments, she is gifted in vocabulary usage, spelling and grammar, but the process of writing becomes a long, drawn-out process.

She wants to “hover” over a slew of ideas but struggles to land the plane. When she does land the plane, it will take hours.

Will your book and the forms therein help us?

Karen McGold

Karen,

There is a direct connection with the ability to pull out the main idea and important details and note-taking. You want to be sure the notes you take are meaningful and when you don’t know how to quickly pull out that information from either reading a passage or listening to a lecture, you are ‘sunk’.

That is one of the specific reasons I designed the graphic organizers in Ten Minutes to Better Study Skills in the manner that I did. These forms not only help you with note-taking, they also become a ‘study-guide’ for you when you are reviewing the material or answering the questions at the end of a section or chapter. They can also be used to learn how to take notes while listening to a lecture or presentation.

The graphic organizer fill-in-the-blank forms are designed specifically with your daughter in mind.

Another product that will also help her is our game the Comprehension Zone because it teaches you specifically how to pull out the main idea, details, and sequence what you read or listen to in a game format. It can be played for both reading or listening comprehension. Playing with the skill, practicing the skill through play, and then utilizing the Ten Minutes to Better Study Skills will go a long way in teaching her those missing skills.

Parents want to help their kids improve their skills. That is a given as far as I’m concerned. All parents want the best for their children and when learning reading, writing, or spelling is hard they often don’t know where to turn. Parents often spend a small fortune seeking the help they need for their child. I know what it is like, being a parent as well as a teacher.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve purchased materials that haven’t worked. That is what I keep in mind when I design materials to use with my struggling (LD, dyslexic, ADHD, or gifted) students – whether they are in 1st grade, 5th grade, 8th grade, high school, or even adult students. I want to create materials that will work, that will improve their reading skills, writing skills, and spelling skills and be affordable at the same time. It truly is one of my passions.

Each reading, writing, and spelling product is developed out of the needs of my students and is tested with them to be sure they work. We look at ease of usage and the results the reading, writing, and spelling materials produce. But, I don’t want you to take my word for it. After all, I created the materials, although I am truly inspired when I create them, so I can’t take total credit at all!

What I would like to do is to share what Donna Morello has to say about our program here – our Awaken the Scholar Within Program where I coach you on how to help your children yourself and provide you with the reading, writing, and spelling materials to do so. Because I walk you through the materials – the program, holding your hand so to speak, they work. You are no longer alone just buying something and hoping it will work.

With our Awaken the Scholar Within Program you have the opportunity to ask me your questions twice a week. You have every avenue of support available to you. Do yourself a favor and listen in to hear what Donna Morello and Janet Landerholm have to say.
