<p>I found you through Youtube and am intrigued by the <em>10 Minutes to Better Study Skills</em>!</p>
<p>My home-schooled daughter is 16 and dual-enrolling in our local community college and currently in her first class.</p>
<p>She is struggling with note-taking!  She also took the SAT in June and scored poorly in the reading portion, especially the &#8220;passage&#8221; reading. I&#8217;m beginning to make the connection with these two problems&#8230; there seems to be a struggle, for her, in pulling out keys points in a written document, or passage, and in an oral lecture.</p>
<p>She tends to want to write down too much from a lecture and gets overwhelmed when given a passage to read with questions to answer, especially when timed. For writing assignments, she is gifted in vocabulary usage, spelling and grammar, but the process of writing becomes a long, drawn-out process.</p>
<p>She wants to &#8220;hover&#8221; over a slew of ideas but struggles to land the plane.  When she does land the plane, it will take hours.</p>

<p>There is a direct connection with the ability to pull out the main idea and important details and note-taking. You want to be sure the notes you take are meaningful and when you don&#8217;t know how to quickly pull out that information from either reading a passage or listening to a lecture, you are &#8216;sunk&#8217;.</p>
<p>That is one of the specific reasons I designed the graphic organizers in<a href="http://www.bonnieterrylearning.com/reading/"><em> Ten Minutes to Better Study Skills</em></a> in the manner that I did. These forms not only help you with note-taking, they also become a &#8216;study-guide&#8217; for you when you are reviewing the material or answering the questions at the end of a section or chapter. They can also be used to learn how to take notes while listening to a lecture or presentation.</p>
<p>The graphic organizer fill-in-the-blank forms are designed specifically with your daughter in mind.</p>

<p>My question is what is the best sequence of teaching spelling patterns to dyslexic students?</p>
<p>Which spelling patterns in particular will be the most tough for the  dyslexics to grasp &amp; what knock-on effect can they have<br />
on the learning of other patterns?</p>
<p>Which doors would be opened in reading &amp; writing by knowing a  certain pattern &amp; which would be closed if the pattern was not  known??</p>

<p>There are only 8 spelling patterns in the English language. I teach spelling with the spelling books &#8211; <a href="http://www.bonnieterrylearning.com/spelling/"><em>Making Spelling Sense</em> and <em>Making Spelling Sense II</em>.</a> The spelling books are designed to work with dyslexics of all ages. In addition to teaching spelling patterns it addresses both auditory and visual processing at the same time.</p>
<p>I always start with the vowel/consonant spelling  pattern as it is the easiest one to learn and the most predominant spelling pattern in the English language. Then I go on to the vowel consonant silent e spelling pattern. The other spelling patterns follow.</p>
<p>As you gradually introduce the patterns with multiple lessons per spelling pattern, I don&#8217;t think there is really one pattern that would be considered the hardest one.</p>
<p>When you understand the structure of the language you can not only spell thousands of words, you can also decode thousands of words. Teaching spelling with this spelling program addresses both encoding (spelling &#8211; writing the word down) and decoding (sounding out words &#8211; reading) simultaneously.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The CNN Survey concludes that at some point most parents turn to medication as a treatment to deal with their child&#8217;s ADHD. The second most effective treatment parents have used is to make a switch in schools &#8211; to a school that is better equipped to work with children with attention deficit disorder.</p>
<p>When I speak to parents about attention deficit disorder I always try to be sure they are in the know on what they can do as well as what some of the best ways to advocate for their child in the school system. Many teachers are not equipped to deal with attention deficit disorder and don&#8217;t want to deal with it. However, I don&#8217;t know that there is a classroom in the US, or worldwide for that matter that doesn&#8217;t have at least one ADHD student in the class. (Approximately 9-10% of the population has ADHD).</p>
<p>So, in my opinion what is key is for parents to build a strong working relationship with their child&#8217;s teacher to help them help their child navigate through their education while learning to deal with their ADHD.  There are many behavioral ways of dealing with attention deficit disorder that can be easily implemented in the classroom. Additionally, medication is sometimes warranted, but I always say, exhaust every other possibility first. Then if you still need to go the medication route, do it. If your child needed eye glasses you would not &#8216;blink an eye&#8217; over the decision, you would get them glasses. If your child needed a hearing aid, again, you would do it. If your child does need medication to be able to function in a classroom because every avenue has been pursued and they still can&#8217;t focus, do it.</p>
<p>But, medication is only one piece of the puzzle. Even with medication, behavioral interventions often still need to be in place and followed through on. So educating your child&#8217;s teacher is often imperative in helping them have a good school year. When you create a good working relationship with your child&#8217;s teacher you will have greater success in helping them understand what they need to know and do to help your child.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Parents want to help their kids improve their skills. That is a given as far as I&#8217;m concerned. All parents want the best for their children and when learning reading, writing, or spelling is hard they often don&#8217;t know where to turn. Parents often spend a small fortune seeking the help they need for their child.  I know what it is like, being a parent as well as a teacher. </p>
<p>I can&#8217;t tell you how many times I&#8217;ve purchased materials that haven&#8217;t worked. That is what I keep in mind when I design materials to use with my struggling (LD, dyslexic, ADHD, or gifted) students &#8211; whether they are in 1st grade, 5th grade, 8th grade, high school, or even adult students. I want to create materials that will work, that will improve their reading skills, writing skills, and spelling skills and be affordable at the same time. It truly is one of my passions.</p>
<p>Each reading, writing, and spelling product is developed out of the needs of my students and is tested with them to be sure they work. We look at ease of usage and the results the reading, writing, and spelling materials produce. But, I don&#8217;t want you to take my word for it. After all, I created the materials, although I am truly inspired when I create them, so I can&#8217;t take total credit at all! </p>

<p>You mentioned at the time that you are open to questions as I began using the materials&#8211;and, of course, I now have those questions! </p>
<p>-My son will be entering 3rd grade. His 2nd grade teacher noted his reading fluency as low proficient at end of year (technically passing, according to the DRA2-28 which they started using this year). At some point in the last few months of school, some one of his reading teachers at school appears to have told him that he  read at 120 words per minute, and he adamantly clings to this. </p>
<p>However, I clearly see where he is still skipping or guessing at words inaccurately (and I don&#8217;t know if they measured that). So, when I put the 5 minutes to reading book in front of him, he was insulted&#8211;very put off. I tried explaining to him that we were not measuring speed so much as accuracy, and that we could chart his accuracy as it improved. I explained that even adults use this program. I offered to let him start with one of the later exercise if we would then go back to the first and didn&#8217;t get much more cooperation than I had originally gotten (though he did a fairly good job of reading exercise 45). Do you have any thoughts on how to break the resistance without forcing him to do it? </p>
<p>-My son&#8217;s other complaint about the exercises is that they feel to him like tongue twisters because all the words sound the same, and he really doesn&#8217;t like that. Do you have any suggestions for changing that perception? </p>
<p>I am very interested to see if I can get him to use this program, and interested to see if we will see results&#8211;but I am meeting with HUGE resistance up front. I really don&#8217;t want to force him to do it because I think that will diminish the results. </p>

<p>Hi Joan,</p>
<p>I&#8217;m glad you see that he isn&#8217;t actually reading 120 words per minute with accuracy. I never understand how they are measuring the kids when they say things like that because you can see from what you&#8217;ve done already, that is NOT the REALITY! When you time him, you can show him what he actually did. That should start to get him to see the reality &#8211; his words per minute and mistakes per minute. Explain how you are scoring him. If you need to press the point, you can even have him total his words up after you time him, so he knows how many there are. I&#8217;ve had to do that with a few students over the years. I don&#8217;t do it to be &#8216;mean,&#8217; but sometimes they need a reality check so you can move forward.</p>
<p>We start with easy words &#8211; because we are working on accuracy as well as speed. Big words are just little words (syllables) put together. If you can&#8217;t read the small words accurately, you won&#8217;t be able to read larger ones efficiently and accurately either &#8211; which will mean you will end up re-reading your social studies book or science book 3-4 times in order to be able to answer the questions.</p>
<p>I know this, this happened not only with many students, but with my own son. In fact, he flung his 3 pound social studies book at me saying, &#8220;Mom, I&#8217;ve read it 3 times and still can&#8217;t find the answers. You do it.&#8221; This was because of his skipping, repeating, or mispronouncing words. Once we consistently did the <em>5 Minutes to Better Reading</em> he was able to read his book one time and get the answers &#8211; because he read with accuracy in a quick amount of time. Doing the program &#8211; 5 minutes a day, will end up saving hours and hours of homework time. We are looking at the big picture here &#8211; making his life easier for the rest of his schooling &#8211; which at a minimum is the next 10 years (through high school).</p>
<p>But, you really need to start at the beginning &#8211; even though it may seem easy at first. Even my adult students start at the beginning! You are competing against yourself, no one else! And, yes, some of the drills are like &#8216;tongue twisters&#8217;. That is on purpose &#8211; to be sure you learn to read exactly what is there. Your son may think it is &#8216;too easy&#8217;, but his &#8216;fussing&#8217; about it is actually telling you how much he needs it &#8211; that it is actually taxing and stretching his visual processing system. Hang in there! And remind him, it is only 5 minutes a day. It is not like you are expecting him to work for 2 hours or even one hour. You are only asking 5 minutes. And, when you are consistent, you will see results in just a few days.</p>
<p>The more you do it, the easier it gets and the more they see themselves improving the easier it gets. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Summer stretches out before you. Your kids are excited about being out of school. However, it doesn’t take too long before your kids are claiming they are bored. So, to keep your kids interested over the summer, one of the easiest things to do is to provide fun learning games for your kids. </p>
<p>Research has shown that when kids are not involved with learning activities over the summer, their skills don’t just stay where they were at the end of the school year. Instead, your kids lose ground and retention of what they learned over the prior school year. So, one thing you can do to prevent this learning slide, is to play learning games over the summer.<br />

<p>&#8220;What?!&#8221; you say, &#8220;You&#8217;re having great time in grammar class?&#8221;</p>
<p>Why, yes. That&#8217;s exactly what I meant.  Thanks to <em>The Sentence Zone</em>, a grammar game designed by Bonnie Terry Learning, grammar can not only be bright and colorful, but as much fun as a game of Monopoly. Here is how it works, as described by Bonnie Terry:</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a fun way to improve writing and grammar skills, this game is for you! For 2 to 6 players, grades 1st and up. Rules are easily mastered. <em>The Sentence Zone</em> can be played at six levels &#8211; from Level 1 in which the player builds a subject and verb sentence, to Level 6 in which the player builds complex sentences with independent and dependent clauses. With over 500 color coded cards, students are sure to be unique and entertaining every time. A great reinforcing individual activity where a player keeps track of his score from day to day, trying to top his previous score, or a great group activity where competition drives creativity and learning.</p>
<p>It took me a little while to figure out <em>The Sentence Zone</em>. It wasn&#8217;t a game that we could play right out of the box.  But after reading the directions, and realizing the many directions the game could go, we got started learning our grammar and &#8211; enjoying &#8211; it!  Since enjoyment leads the way to a love of learning, <em>The Sentence Zone</em> is a success in our home.</p>
