Help Your Kids Improve Reading Skills

As a parent you do have the power and ability to help your kids improve their reading skills. There are 4 easy to implement activities that each take just a few minutes a day to improve reading.

Improve reading fluency in 5 minutes a day

Improve spelling and learn the 8 ways we put letters together to make words

Improve reading comprehension by playing a reading comprehension game

Improve writing skills using specially designed graphic organizers

Today I’m going to talk about the first activity you can implement in just minutes a day.

Improve Reading Skills: Reading Fluency Training

Reading fluency training is one of the easiest activities for parents to do with their kids to improve reading skills, and it only takes 5 minutes a few times a week to make a dramatic difference. Reading fluency training works to improve reading skills whether you have LD, dyslexia, are falling through the cracks, or are even gifted.

You may not realize how important reading fluency and accuracy is, so here is an example on how it impacts your reading or your child’s reading.

For example, you are reading a passage and read Susan can go to the store. You finish reading the selection and go to the questions and there is a question that asks, Why couldn’t Susan go to the store? You think to yourself – What…I read Susan can go to the store. This question doesn’t make any sense to me. BUT, what the sentence actually said was…Susan can’t go to the store. Your eyes skipped the apostrophe t…The whole meaning was lost.

That is one of the things that the Five Minutes to Better Reading Skills reading fluency training program corrects. With improved reading fluency, you don’t skip or omit words or parts of words. You don’t miss out on important pieces that are critical to reading comprehension. That is why it is important to have accurate reading for reading comprehension.

Bonnie,

I found you through Youtube and am intrigued by the 10 Minutes to Better Study Skills!

My home-schooled daughter is 16 and dual-enrolling in our local community college and currently in her first class.

She is struggling with note-taking! She also took the SAT in June and scored poorly in the reading portion, especially the “passage” reading. I’m beginning to make the connection with these two problems… there seems to be a struggle, for her, in pulling out keys points in a written document, or passage, and in an oral lecture.

She tends to want to write down too much from a lecture and gets overwhelmed when given a passage to read with questions to answer, especially when timed. For writing assignments, she is gifted in vocabulary usage, spelling and grammar, but the process of writing becomes a long, drawn-out process.

She wants to “hover” over a slew of ideas but struggles to land the plane. When she does land the plane, it will take hours.

Will your book and the forms therein help us?

Karen McGold

Karen,

There is a direct connection with the ability to pull out the main idea and important details and note-taking. You want to be sure the notes you take are meaningful and when you don’t know how to quickly pull out that information from either reading a passage or listening to a lecture, you are ‘sunk’.

That is one of the specific reasons I designed the graphic organizers in Ten Minutes to Better Study Skills in the manner that I did. These forms not only help you with note-taking, they also become a ‘study-guide’ for you when you are reviewing the material or answering the questions at the end of a section or chapter. They can also be used to learn how to take notes while listening to a lecture or presentation.

The graphic organizer fill-in-the-blank forms are designed specifically with your daughter in mind.

Another product that will also help her is our game the Comprehension Zone because it teaches you specifically how to pull out the main idea, details, and sequence what you read or listen to in a game format. It can be played for both reading or listening comprehension. Playing with the skill, practicing the skill through play, and then utilizing the Ten Minutes to Better Study Skills will go a long way in teaching her those missing skills.

Now a new study suggests writing disorders are just as common as reading disabilities and are most likely to affect boys. One such disorder is dysgraphia, which includes problems with handwriting, spelling and organizing thoughts on paper.

While the majority of children diagnosed with a writing problem also had a reading disability, researchers say one-fourth of those studied only had a writing issue.

As for why boys have more writing problems than girls, the study in the journal Pediatrics says the gender gap issue needs more research.

I just started reading the book How to Read a Book. It was written in 1940 about reading. One of the very interesting comments it makes is ”there is some feeling nowadays that reading is not as necessary as it once was.” This statement was made in 1940! How many of us think that is the current situation? After all, we have video, ipods, computers, and televisions that have taken over many of the functions of books, newspapers, and journals. What often happens then is that people don’t have to actually ‘make up their minds’ about anything, instead they can just take the opinions of others without having to actually think.

This is one of the reasons reading is so critical, so that we teach everyone to think for themselves. Remember, reading is an actual activity. You can’t be passive when you read. You need to actually put out some effort and receive the information the writer is giving. Reading becomes almost like playing catch with a ball. The writer throws the ball and the reader catches it.

Your success in catching the ball, reading, is then determined by how much you receive, understand, and utilize the information you have read. Reading is so much more than just word calling. Reading is the active understanding, contemplation, and utilization of the written word where you gain a greater understanding than you had before you started to read.

There are several goals of reading: to gain information, to have increased understanding, and to be entertained. Reading for entertainment is the least demanding kind of reading and requires the least amount of effort. This is why we start our children off with reading stories for entertainment. This helps to provide both ease and love of reading.

Once the process of reading is relatively easy, we add reading for information in the way of history, geography, and science. With this in mind, anytime your children read for pleasure, whether it is comic books, short stories, or novels, take the time to rejoice that they will have an easier time when it comes to reading for information. Pleasure reading is just that, pleasure reading. So, it is fine to read a book that is written at an easier grade level than their textbooks.

Our goal here is to create readers. As we create readers we can start to teach them how to process, retain, and comprehend the written word. It is easiest to do this starting with simple note-taking from the short stories or books they have read. Teach the process with material that is easy and fun. Once children are familiar with how to take notes and write summaries it is easy to move on to the goal of reading for information, understanding, utilization, and enlightenment with their text book reading.

There are painless ways to do this. Note taking and writing projects don’t have to be hard. Using specially designed graphic organizers will make the process quick and pain free!

We can’t keep our head in the sand, just ‘playing back’ someone elses opinions. Our children deserve better than that. Our nation deserves better than that. We can teach them how to read for meaning and how to utilize what they have read.

Hope you find this helpful. Forward this article to someone who would benefit from it – they can subscribe to the rss feed and receive more tips like it. You can also receive free teaching and homework tips by entering your email in the form on upper right of the page.

The conduct of successful reading merely consists in doing things in a very simple way, doing them regularly, and never neglecting to do them.

There are simple things you can do every day or 3 days a week, never neglecting them, to empower your students to become successful readers.
